how do i know if the heat sink on my MacBooks have been replaces or not, they were both costom orderd MBs and i did wait 1 month to get them from apple website
I don't think Apple changed their assembly line until week 35. If the serial number of your Mac is less than 4H635, then I don't think it has the new heatsink.

Man, Apple keeps getting lower and lower. First Walmart, now this?

Who cares where you buy it?

It's still an iPad, right?

There is nothing wrong with shopping at Wal-Mart, whether it be for school supplies, tv for a college dorm room, or toothpaste.

To the point, there are documentaries and sociological studies that exist documenting Wal-Mart's "bullying" ways in the marketplace. Just like the vacuum story - they demand lower prices from their suppliers so they can provide lower prices for customers. If they don't get what they want, they'll go to China. I hope they finally get caught. Wal-Mart is an easy target right now, but at least my toothpaste is cheap. :)

I would say for laptops Apple is up in the top three for the best built and what not. For desk tops... ALL companies suck. The best ones are the ones you build yourself. Handsdown.

Windows or mac. I use windows. I don't really care to much. It runs my programs and thats the only thing that matters. I don't use most of their installed programs because they suck. I use chrome as my webbrowser, VLC to play videos, iTunes for music (the halo effect. I got when I had my Ipod. Sold my iPod for School books. got a new computer and realized it was the fifth program i installed.) Open office for documents. I basically own windows for the basic ability to interact with my hardware. Other then that I don't need it.

I do have Mac os on it, but most of the drivers don't work and i am to lazy/don't care to get ones that work for my hardware. I would love to see apple allow people to run OEM mac OS.

Here's hoping the new iPod touch won't have such a crappy camera.

    +1

This would be a welcome improvement.

I love how everybody is like "I've got the CDs who cares" or "Buy the CDs they are cheaper". The Beatles on iTunes isn't for you. It is for people who don't buy CDs, it's for the future when the majority of people get digital music and it's certainly for a whole generation of kids who won't know what a CD is or care, in the same way that vinyl is now seen as archaic.

I'm sure I am repeating someone else's thoughts, but it doesn't seem clear to a lot of people.

It's too bad that these kids will never know how much better sounding a CD can be over 256kbs. I put applelossless on my iPod and when I let someone listen they usually say wow! it sounds so good.

While that thread is indeed hilarious, keep in mind that the thing cost $399 and was Mac and FireWire-only. It would never have taken off if it weren't for the big changes in future revisions that fixed those issues.

I'd also have to disagree with the notion that people are inherently good, but we can save that discussion for another time.
No, I think this is an ideal time and place to deal with this issue. If we are discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the christian bible, this is one of the biggest.

Genesis is pretty clear on the subject. Even if you live your whole life within the bounds of the Forty-Seven Commandments and never violate god's law, you are still bad because you and all of humanity are stained by original sin. Only through faith and prayer can you be redeemed in the eyes of god.

In other words, it is perfectly natural for a believer to think that people are inherently bad. Quite a fine starting point, that. Life itself is continual penitence for something you had no part in. Only by praying, tithing and doing "god's work" can you overcome the hideous burden of your ancestry.

But what are "good" and "bad"? Can you always make that determination? Is this why we have clerics, to help us understand the subtleties of morality in terms of "god's law"? To manipulate the interpretation of scripture to make it applicable?

To an unbeliever, a person is born morally neutral. Their actions can only be graded on the basis of how others are impacted, because "good" and "bad" often change drastically based on one's perspective. As far as I can tell, the most reliable moral measure, beyond direct harm, is whether an action involves arbitrary exercise of power over others, for there can be no "evil" without power.

This principle flies in the face of religious teaching: one can think evil thoughts and hatch evil plots, but if one lacks the power (or inclination) to carry them out, there is no evil. Scripture clearly shows that "god's law" can be violated in your head as much as by your hand, and one small mental lapse without proper repentance can doom your soul.

So believers take comfort in the fact that they are doing "god's work". Whatever that means. I say that because "the lord works in mysterious ways", so to know that your course is divinely inspired, most of you have to rely on biblical scholars to figure out how to proceed with "god's plan for your life." Whatever that means.

Take away the inspiration of divine guidance and what is left? How can life be tolerable without knowing that one is acting on god's behalf, without the promise of eternal joy on the other side, without the warmth of god's love filling your heart? Is it not a bleak existence?

No. This life is what we get. It is fascinating and terrifying and frustrating and uplifting. Lacking the delusion of god, we replace it with a broad appreciation for everything just as it is. When we help others, we do it because it makes sense and it makes everyone feel good, without the need for the feeling that some supernatural being is giving us a gold star for it. And we resolve difficult moral dilemmas with the compromises that leave everyone disgruntled, because pat answers are not appropriate for complicated situations, and bending the rules to make them fit the situation makes less sense than just trying to work it out.

So keep your inherently-not-good people to yourselves, they are messing things up for the rest of us.

Noticed that the Mac Mini got a bump too? Core Duo 1.66 for the low end and Core Duo 1.87 for the high end version. But it seems like the low end version doesn't even has an option for a super drive? Weird...

The 24" iMac looks cool :)

Of course, that also assumes that the average person walking into a major retailer would or could know that little bit of info. The average consumer certainly could know about oem versions of windows if they did any research at all, it's pretty much common knowledge in the PC world.

Personally, I have no plans whatsoever to buy Vista. That's fine, I'm not trying to convince anyone to switch to windows. No need to get defensive.

I just wanted people on here with little to no windows background to understand that the $400 retail price isn't what you will pay for the software when you buy it included with a system or on it's own oem.

FYI, for those that say "who cares about Walmart" there is this little fact (of which I'm not going to sight a source because I'm busy at work).
Walmart sells 40% of all DVDs sold in the US.
Think about that. Of all the places that sell DVDs, of all the places people go, 4 of every 10 is bought at walmart. That is ridicules power, and not something the studios will just gloss over. They will make sure they know what they are doing before making steps forward. Maybe it won't matter at all, but it isn't a number to just ignore.

I sooo regret installing itunes 7 now. And you can't even revert back to the old one. With the amount of music I have, it's freaking time consuming having to scroll down to find the artist I wanna listen to since the Artist's name is repeated for each album, so there's thousands and thousands of things to scroll through.

And now its impossible to choose to listen to, for example, only Clapton and Hendrix. Before I could just command+click each artist or even album and there, instant quick playlist. Now I have to create an actual playlist, and probably remember to delete it or else I'll end up with tons of lists.

All in all, this is visually nice upgrade but the usability is down the pan drastically. Its virtually unusable and VERY time consuming.

APPLE BRING BACK COLUMN VIEW PLEASE!!

... it's right there on the bottom right

Apple may have released Xcod 2.4. But it's only for those at the WWDC. I checked Apple's ADC website, and they have it listed, but it redirects you to http://connect.apple.com. I did some more digging, and they only have 2.3 on the site. They might upload it after the WWDC.

Can we get the new ones with the school promotion?

Nope. You can read the PDF on the apple website for details.

seems kinda sly to unload the old nanos on poor students.

You're not suggesting we should feel sorry for someone getting a FREE nano, even if it's the previous model?

While many people are looking for Apple to integrate a radio tuner into the iPod it isn't going to happen.

They already have a radio tuner add-on if you really want one. Personally, the whole point of getting an iPod is so I can avoid radio.

some people just want an ipod for listening to music.
not every apple user in the world needs all that iOS stuff.

i'm really hoping for an ultimate classic model, but i'm being a bit hopeless.

    meantime I just bought a used 4g ipod classic 20gb for 30 (40$), it's wonderful :)

The only usable iPod is the iPod Touch. The ClickWheel "interface" of the classic is a royal pain in the back when you have to navigate through thousands of titles. And even the interface of the iPod Touch could be much better if they dropped all those useless animations and transition effects that only achieve one thing: They slow me down. And that is especially dangerous when using the bloody thing while driving a car.

Very often, I envy the people who have a USB port in their car radio; they just plug in a USB stick without all those unnecessary fancy things and they are not locked into the "iTunes experience" or any other DRM prison.

Surely there's a place for a high capacity iPod. 32GB doesn't cut it. Even 64GB doesn't cut it.

64 GB is six times the size of my current mp3 library. But I only keep the stuff that I actually like to hear. I'm no longer collecting full albums just because I can. It doesn't make sense to keep unnecessary things around just because you have the storage capacity for it. It's a waste.

"The things you own end up owning you."

It'll be $129 the same as ALL of the past upgrades except for Snow Leopard which was Leopard but just a slimmed-down, rewriting of the OS. Apple felt that without a lot of core new features being added, they would give the public a break and just charge a nominal fee for Snow Leopard, rather than the typical $129.

Don't listen to anyone who says differently. It will be $129.

It'll be cheaper if bought via the Mac App Store, just like Aperture is cheaper than the off the shelf, boxed version when bought via the Mac App Store.
